How are Cell Phones Affecting Our Generation?

2007, that was when the first iPhone came out. That was also when a great twist in human history happened. How many times a day do you look at your phone simply out of boredom? How many times do you look at that little box that may as well contain your life? I’m guessing….a lot. Smartphones have become one of the main forms of communication in this generation. But maybe we should stop and think of how they may be harming us. Here are some weird stuff that you might do without even knowing:

1-  Body posture.

Yes, you read that right. Did you know that slouching while looking at your phone for hours is horrible for your neck and back? In fact, some doctors use the terms “iposture” and “text neck” when it comes to describing strong stress on your back and neck muscles. But don’t worry, it’s not the end of the world! One way to fix this is to hold your phone in front of you instead of at your lap. It may seem weird but it’s better than stressing your neck and back muscles!

2-  Eye pain

Having a tiny font on your phone and scrolling through thousand texts and posts can actually cause dizziness, blurred vision, and dry eyes. This eventually leads to a headache. So, to avoid all of this, try holding your phone at least sixteen inches away from your face.  Try to make the font on your phone bigger, and look up from your phone and look at something far away every few minutes or so. Be sure to blink a lot too!

3- Imaginary phone vibration

Sounds weird right? Well it’s exactly what you think it is. A study in Indiana University showed that 89% of the undergraduates in that study felt that their phone was vibrating when it wasn’t. It gets worse if your dependant on your phone for stuff like texts or snapchat, instagram, etc…

To stop this try closing the vibration on your phone and only checking at certain times. Also, instead of putting it in your pocket, try having it in your bag for a change.

4- Fear of not being with your phone.

Some may fear being in the dark or being in a crowded place for too long, but a fear that I find rather interesting, and common,is being afraid of not having your phone with you. Yes that’s an actual thing! An article from scientific America , a valuable source, states “ when it comes to the acquisition and retention of information, our brains treat our devices like relationship partners.”  meaning that our brain may depend on getting the information from our phone instead of trying to figure it out itself.

One way to stop this is to practice stress relieving sports and movements like yoga and constantly taking deep breaths.
