Venom

The latest box-office domestic-record-breaking Sony/Marvel movie, Venom, hit the cinemas in early October and was immediately attacked by critics. The real question though is, was it really that bad? Or are these critics abusing the fact that Marvel Studios doesn’t have full rights, so they’re exaggerating?

Throughout all the 20+ MCU movies that have been released over the last decade, no movie has been exposed to this amount of hate. Coincidence? I believe not.  Earlier this year, Marvel Studios released the legendary superhero movie Avengers: Infinity War, which did receive some hate.  However, it was overthrown by all the love and praise. Marvel and Sony have proved themselves worthy, beating DC Studios and their associates Warner Bros. On the other hand, Sony’s movies always get more hate from critics than I think is fair.

The movie ‘Venom’ based on the almost 2,000 comics starring the character created by David Michelinie and Todd McFarlane. Eddie Brock, a reporter, eager to get a big story, gets himself into trouble with one of the world’s biggest scientific researching visionaries, Carlton Drake. One accident leads to another disastrous set of mistakes; Eddie Brock meets the symbiote, Venom. Venom was first introduced in the Sony-Marvel spiderman universe as the enemy of Peter Parker (Spider-man); however, contradicting previous appearances of Venom, things do change up a bit in 2018’s interpretation.

Hours after its release, Richard Roeper said that the movie was “A tone-deaf, uneven and maddeningly dumb clunker that never settles on an identity, all the way to the closing credits,” closing it off with a rating of 1.5/4. Personally, I don’t agree. It was a spin on the previous Venom representations, and this wasn’t necessarily that bad of an idea. Most of the fans agree, that just because the movie wasn’t a straight-up action movie, a romance, or even a full-on comedy, the overall impression of the movie was great, and it truly was a ‘look at the dark side (of  Marvel and Sony)’. I still recommend watching this movie no matter what they say, and I hope people go down to the cinema themselves and create their own opinion instead of basing theirs on others.
